After frivolous shopping during the days before Christmas and other holidays in december, adults start wrapping their gifts for their children, however their choices of wrapping can damage the environment.

It’s that time of the year again, where kids sent letters to Santa and adults go on a shopping spree, most of which are toys and wrapping paper to wrap said toys. However, with these last-minute shoppings, its very easy to pollute the environment faster than usual. What I mean by this is that both the items you buy and the material you wrap them with pollute the enviromnent, namely wrapping paper.

Reusing Wrapping

Most people just buy wrapping paper from their local Wal-mart or other local shops, however wrapping paper is , one, not degradable, and two, just like plastic, takes very long to decompose, if not longer. One tip to reduce your pollution for good is just finding common household items to wrap presents with. For example, you may be collecting newspapers for enjoyment during long days when even your phone can’t provide you with entertainment, but those same papers could be used as wrapping paper. Not only do you save money, you pollute less than just buying wrapping paper at the store. Another option, albeit a bit more expensive, is getting recycable wrapping paper. While it may be a bit more pricey for your budget, it does make a difference in protecting the environment.

Reduce Wrapping

When we do use wrapping paper, or a substitute, we usually don’t mind how much we use to wrap a gift, or maybe we wrap around it twice or thrice to make sure the wrapping stays on. However, these extra wrappings are unnecessary. Instead just use one, or if you really can’t help yourself, then do one and a half, saving you money, time, and the environment around you.

Recycling Wrapping

Wrapping paper (shown above) is made of wood, and while wood itself can be recycled, wood covered in Mylar (plastic film coated with aluminum) is not. This wrapping paper is on the way to be coated in Mylar and other dyes, and soon sent to new journeys, until the end of its life, which is called The Landfill.

After your kids or coworkers unwrap their presents, we usually just pick them up into a giant bag and throw them in the trash, and while its better than leaving it on the floor, its still not as good, since its then sent to landfills, just laying there producing carbon for years to come. Instead, using biodegradable or recyclable paper can be useful, since it can either get used to create new products, or degrade much faster than normal wrapping.

Cardboard Reuse

Cardboard boxes can be used to make DIY gift bags, and since cardboard boxes nowadays are becoming increasingly recyclable/biodegradable, it makes more sense to reuse cardboard you may have thought about throwing away, such as cereal boxes and packages from shopping, such as Amazon delivery boxes. This protects the environment from extra plastic, and since they are biodegradable, they don’t harm the environment long-term.

These cardboard brands. (shown above) were just your common household items that you probably didn’t give a second thought and planned to throw away. However, this family decided to repurpose cardboard boxes so that they could be used as an oatmeal breakfast, and created a brand out of this idea.

Cardboard Recycle

If people choose to use cardboard or other recyclable, greener products, they then have to figure out how to properly recycle it, because if you just drop it in your local recycling station, its not gonna get recycled, and instead will be sent to the landfill. Instead, for cardboard boxes, if you want to protect the environment, you have to remove any packing materials, like Styrofoam or packing peanuts, make sure its dry and clean, however, if its wet, it still can be recycled, granted you dry it after.

  10. This is so great to see your generation taking the lead on Climate Change! I remember when Al Gore really brought it to the attention of the nation back in the 90s and the world didnt really take it as seriously as it should have at the time. Unfortunately, we are now seeing so many of the effects too late now. I hope that the world really steps up FAST and reverses course otherwise it may be too late. Environmental effects are like dominoes……once they start falling over its a chain reaction that cannot be stopped. Everything is interconnected in nature! Keep up the great work…..we need all the voices and activism it will take. After all……we have to live on this planet for quite a few more decades! There is no backup 😛

    1. Thank you for the support. I agree, the environmental effects are like dominoes, once one falls the rest also fall, however we still have a choice to stop it from falling to the point of us either permanently living underground, or leaving this planet for another, or even become extinct! We need to make sure we do not harm nature to the point of no return.

  11. I love how much thought and effort you did in writing this article. The idea of using recycled paper is a very smart idea in order to avoid cutting down more trees to make and print more wrapping paper. I can’t wait to hear more of your ideas!
